FlyPharma Vienna 2024

FlyPharma Europe’s 2022 agenda addressed the needs and challenges faced by pharma and cargo companies both within Europe and with a global outlook.

Our speakers covered all areas of the supply chain: from leaving the manufacturer to reaching the patient. Presentations and panel discussions asked delegates to rethink current concepts and practices concerning pharma logistics, and offered advice on how to implement change in your company and through your partnerships.

12:40     HOW THE CONTROL TOWER BECAME MISSION CRITICAL TO VACCINE DISTRIBUTION – CASE STUDY

The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on supply chain vulnerabilities, but it also has led to opportunities to improve processes and accelerated technology adoption. Thankfully, over the last several years, the pharmaceutical supply chain has increased its use of real-time technology and cloud-enabled analytics. Resilient pharma companies are using tools that provide the historical, live, and predictive analytics capabilities that allow them to quickly adjust course when needed. The future supply chain will have resilience woven throughout each link. It will be based on visibility, collaboration, and automation.

Session attendees will learn:

  • About some of the lessons learned so far from the COVID-19 vaccine distribution
  • How the cold chain control tower has helped ensure a 99.99% successful delivery rate
  • About the future role of the cold chain control tower post-pandemic

Presentation by Ada Palmadottir, VP of Business Development, Controlant, and Tomas Fant, Temperature Control Logistics Global Projects Lead, Pfizer

14:10     TIME- AND TEMPERATURE-SENSITIVE CARGO HANDLING: HOW TO MEET AND EXCEED CEIV PHARMA HANDLING REQUIREMENTS

“It’s for life” – CEIV needs long-term commitment

  • Do it for the right reasons
  • Certification is not about making a fast buck

Clear communication and team work

  • Clear communication on all levels is required
  • Reach out to other stakeholders of the cool chain (e.g. manufacturer/forwarding agent) and learn from each other
  • Work with other partners of the cool chain in order to provide a more integrated (end-to-end) service (team work)

“It never ends”

  • First you have to jump through numerous hoops and then the real work starts
  • “Constant” reviews, adjustments, training
  • Reach out to other stakeholders of the cool chain and learn from them

“Don’t be overwhelmed” – try to keep things clear and simple

  • Avoid over-complicated processes and structures
  • Certification processes and regulations are quite extensive – it would help if IATA and regulators also do not over-complicate matters by adding new rules/requirements

Pharma companies can have very special requirements for their temperature-controlled shipments. Scientifically unique items can be very vulnerable to changes in defined conditions, and pharma companies understand their products intimately. On the other hand, logistics companies have the knowhow and expertise about the packaging solutions and processes available to fulfill all possible requirements. This presentation will discuss how to combine all this expertise in the best possible way to create successful, compliant and cost-effective services.
